What size are dessert plates?
Dessert plates are usually 6 to 8 inches across. Ours come as 6-inch squares, which suit a slice of cake or a few bite-size sweets, and 7 to 7.5-inch rounds, which have room for cake with fruit or ice cream. For anything bigger, our 9-inch plates are halfway between a dessert plate and a dinner plate.
Are salad plates and dessert plates the same size?
Usually, yes. Both are typically 7 to 8 inches, which is why one 7.5-inch plate can serve the salad at dinner and the cake afterward. Buy one plate per guest per course, so a dinner with salad and dessert needs two small plates per guest.
How many dessert plates do I need for 100 guests?
Plan on 110 to 120. That’s one plate per guest plus 10 to 20% for second slices and dropped plates. If dessert is a self-serve table that stays open all evening, go toward the higher number.
What size plate is best for appetizers?
For passed bites and a cocktail hour, a 6 to 7-inch plate is easy to hold with a drink in the other hand. For an appetizer buffet where guests build a fuller plate, 7.5 to 9 inches works better. If appetizers are the whole meal, plan on two plates per guest.
Are plastic dessert plates sturdy enough for cake?
Yes. They’re made from rigid plastic that holds a slice of cake, cheesecake or a few canapés without bending, even when guests eat standing up. For dense or saucy desserts, the heavy-duty sets are the sturdiest choice. Hand guests a plate with a fork already on it so they aren’t juggling both.

Small plates for cake, canapés and salad
These are the small plates of a party: cake after the toasts, canapés at cocktail hour, a side salad with dinner. They come in three main sizes. Six-inch square plates suit cake slices and bite-size desserts. Round plates of 7 to 7.5 inches are the size most people call a salad plate. Nine-inch party plates are for heartier appetizers and light lunches.
How many to buy
For cake, plan one plate per guest plus 10 to 20%, because guests set plates down and go back for a second slice. For appetizers at a cocktail hour, plan one to two plates per guest. For a salad course, one per guest plus about 10% is enough.
Match or mix
Gold-rim and solid-color dessert plates match many of our dinner plates, so the whole table coordinates. Our 60-piece heavy-duty sets pair 30 dinner plates with 30 dessert plates for a smaller party. For a dessert table, add a 3-tier dessert stand and a pack of plastic forks.
Care
These plates are plastic, so keep them out of the microwave and dishwasher. If you want to use them again, hand-wash them in warm, soapy water.
